A Contested Identity: Contemporary Representation of Indonesian Chinese-Muslims on Instagram

The existence of Chinese Muslims in Indonesia is surrounded by a heavily prejudiced belief that Chinese-ness and Islam are considered "unsuitable". Muslims, particularly 'converts- turned-preachers', still unique identity. However, the rise online Islamic piety on Instagram has become one many ways for Muslims' to represent themselves and, some extent, "normalize" their identities. This paper discusses how Chinese-Muslim preachers, namely Felix Siauw Koko Liem, versions Instagram, popular visual-based social media platform Indonesia. research uses Multimodal Discourse Analysis (MDA) observe preachers' identity narratives articulate respective accounts posts. It shown heterogeneous stances contesting interpretations about minority group extent represented through visual appearance narrative both preachers.
